Crystal Costa
CLASSICAL BALLET
Born in Vancouver, Crystal graduated with Honours from Canada’s National Ballet School in 2001.
She joined Hong Kong Ballet that same year and was promoted to Soloist in 2003 and Principal Dancer in 2005. In 2007, Crystal joined the English National Ballet and danced as a First Soloist until 2020. She has toured the world performing on stages such as the Palais Garnier in Paris, the Bolshoi Theatre in Russia and the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan in Japan. She has danced principal roles in almost all the classical ballets including The Sleeping Beauty, Nutcracker, Giselle, Swan Lake, Coppelia, Cinderella, and Theme and Variations. Other highlighted roles include Tchaikovsky Pas de deux, The Chosen One in Pina Bausch’s Rite of Spring, Giselle in Akram Khan’s Giselle, Mistress in Manon and Andrea in Forsythe’s In the Middle Somewhat Elevated. She has had roles created on her by choreographers such as Akram Khan, Aszure Barton, Derek Deane and Itzik Galili. She created the role of Nora by Stina Quagebeur for English National Ballet’s She Persisted triple bill at Sadler’s Wells. Crystal choreographed her first work Mirror for the Hong Kong Ballet’s choreographic workshop in January 2007. In it’s inaugural year, Crystal was nominated for English National Ballet’s Emerging Dancer Award 2010 and that same season won The People’s Choice Award. She has also been nominated by the Critics’ Circle for the National Dance Awards 2010 for Outstanding Female Performance (Classical).
As a teacher and stager, Crystal has taught around the world for companies including English National Ballet, Ballet Dortmund, Hong Kong Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, BalletX, ENB Youth Co, Tanya Pearson Academy in Australia, London’s Central School of Ballet, Pineapple Dance Studios, Danceworks, London Studio Centre/Images Ballet Company, Harbour Dance Centre, Modus Operandi, Arts Umbrella, Vancouver Ballet Society, various vocational ballet schools and is currently a resident teacher for Vancouver’s leading contemporary company Ballet BC. Crystal staged Akram Khan’s Dust in Germany for Ballet Dortmund’s New London Moves triple bill and travels internationally as a rehearsal director and stager for Akram Khan Company.
Her coaching of private students has led to contracts with the Paris Opera Ballet, and guest contracts with Birmingham Royal Ballet and English National Ballet; as well as successful enrolment in prestigious ballet schools around the world such as the full time professional programs at the Paris Opera Ballet School, Royal Ballet Upper School and White Lodge, full time professional program and trainee program at Joffrey Ballet School, Royal Danish Ballet School, European School of Ballet, Master Ballet Academy, ABT’s summer program, as well as finalist and medal placement at the Prix de Lausanne, YAGP (Gold and Finals), The Margot Fonteyn International Ballet Competition, The Grasse International Ballet Competition (Gold) and the IDC in Portugal (Gold).
Having practiced yoga throughout her career, she is also a 600 hour RYT qualified yoga teacher and has additionally completed 95 hours of Advanced Children’s Yoga Teacher Training. Both her ballet and yoga classes can be found on English National Ballet’s online platform Ballet Active. Crystal currently resides in Vancouver, Canada, and travels internationally as a guest.
